3D-Printed Artificial Ear Looks, Acts Just Like the Real Thing

Bioengineers and physicians at Cornell Academy are using 3D printers to create bogus ears that look and deed just like a natural ear.

In a contempo study published in the peer-reviewed scientific journal PLOS 1, the team at Cornell described how they are using 3D printing and injectable gels made of living cells to create artificial ears that "are practically identical to a man ear," according to a news release.

"This is such a win-win for both medicine and bones scientific discipline, demonstrating what we can accomplish when nosotros work together," co-lead author Lawrence Bonassar, associate professor of biomedical engineering, said in a statement.

The technique could benefit children born with a congenital deformity called microtia, where the external ear is not fully adult.
